Soap stars Katie McGlynn and Rob Mallard, who play Sinead and Daniel Osborne in Coronation Street, will take on this year’s Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run for Mummy’s Star.
The on-screen couple became patrons of the charity earlier this year following their heart-breaking storyline in which Katie’s character Sinead was diagnosed with cancer during her pregnancy.
Mummy’s Star is the only charity in the UK and Ireland dedicated to supporting women and their families affected by cancer during pregnancy, and last year worked closely with Coronation Street’s production and research team on the development of the sensitive storyline.
Katie and Rob will join thousands of people for the iconic run on Sunday 19 May, which is returning to the city for a 17th year. It gives runners the chance to experience an event like no other in the heart of the city centre, with 10k and half marathon courses known for their buzzing atmosphere and incredible local support.
Katie made her running announcement on her Instagram account, saying: “So last year after doing the Manchester 10k I said and I quote ‘I’m not going to do this again guys, it’s too flippin hot’, cut to becoming a patron of Mummy’s Star with my onscreen hub. We have decided to take part to raise funds and awareness to this amazing charity! I can’t stress enough the importance of the work these guys do. Helping families who have been affected by cancer during pregnancy. The smallest actions go a long way. We need YOU to help aid these families who are seriously struggling in tragic circumstances. This is something I am truly passionate about after working with these guys during my storyline at Coronation Street.”
The award winning Glossop-based charity was founded by Pete Wallroth, after his wife Mair was diagnosed with cancer when she was 22 weeks pregnant. Two-months after giving birth to their second child, Merlin, Mair sadly passed away at age 41.
Soon after Mair’s death, Pete set up Mummy’s Star to help other families in the same situation, by offering support and advice on cancer diagnosis in pregnancy and postnatally and offering emergency grants for those affected.
Pete will run alongside Katie and Rob on Sunday 19 May and said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Katie and Rob are our patrons and to have them running as part of our team this year is amazing, they will be showing their stars and raising even more awareness for all the mums out there!
“We are busy working with them both in raising vital awareness and in reaching more of the mums and families who need our support. We’ve worked closely with the actors who play Sinead and Daniel in the nation’s favourite soap. During last year we consulted with them, alongside the production and research team at Coronation Street on the development of the emotive cancer and pregnancy storyline that has captured the hearts of their viewers.
“Both actors have been amazing in portraying the very difficult and sensitive scenarios that our mums can face. They have both skilfully and beautifully delivered the emotion and factual scenes depicting the cancer and pregnancy storyline that continues to run.”
