1 in 1000 pregnancies will be affected by cancer.

While this may seem a small number, Dr Richard Simcock (Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Sussex Cancer Centre) believes it is likely to increase, as the average childbearing age increases.

It is vital that current healthcare professionals and those moving into the sector are aware of the unique challenges and difficulties faced when correctly diagnosing and caring for a peri-natal person with cancer.

Cancer and pregnancy is currently absent from many university and training establishments' curriculums.

Mummy's Star offers you the opportunity to bring this vital knowledge to your students or colleagues and ensure they are fully prepared when they meet a patient in this medically and emotionally complex situation.

What does the training cover?

Sessions are built using academic and anecdotal evidence gathered by Mummy’s Star, and its associates and partners, over the last 10 years.

We are constantly updating the content to include the newest, most relevant insights and statistics, as well as telling you more about Mummy’s Star and the support we offer. Most importantly we will bring you the voices and experiences of actual families who we have supported through various stages of pregnancy, illness, and recovery.

Sessions are lead by our CEO Pete, whose personal journey with his wife’s terminal cancer, just weeks after the birth of their second child, was the catalyst for Mummy’s Star.

These sessions are ideal for healthcare professionals or students studying midwifery, nursing, medicine and other disciplines.

Topics covered include:

  • How cancer signs and symptoms can be masked by pregnancy

  • Challenges faced by families post-diagnosis

  • The positive impact that healthcare professionals can have on a patient's experience.

"Thankyou so much you left a wonderful impression on our cohort and I know I personally learnt so much on a topic I actually had never considered when applying for midwifery. I will never forget this session."
