In a world where cashless purchasing is the norm, online fundraising pages are the BEST way to collect sponsorship and donations for your amazing fundraising challenges and events!

Quick and simple to set up

If you decide to use an online page you have lots of options to choose from. We recommend using
Just Giving for most activities and GoFundMe if you want your fundraising to benefit more than one charity.

Set up is a quick and easy online form. You'll be asked to make an account for the fundraising platform if you don't have one already, this is simple and requires an email address. Mummy's Star is also registered on lots of these sites which can make the set-up process even easier.

Easy to share

You can share the URL (weblink) of your page via email, Whatsapp or text messages, and on your social media. Donors only have to click it once to visit your page where they can make their donation.

Many platforms also have the functionality to create QR codes which you can print onto posters, leaflets and invitations. Donors can hold their camera app over the QR code and it will provide the link for them to click.

Supporter Updates, total trackers and more

Most online fundraising pages have total trackers to help you share how close you are to your fundraising goal. They also have space for photos, updates and can link to some exercise apps such as Strava.

If you are fundraising in a group, some platforms like Just Giving, will allow you to set up a Team Page. You can then create individual pages which connect to the Team Page and the fundraising will be tracked both singly and as an overall total.

A free boost to your total, made easy!

Gift Aid is a scheme available to charities that means they can claim extra money from HMRC.

For every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer, we receive an extra 25p, meaning Gift Aid can increase the value of your donations by 25%.

Platforms like Just Giving offer everyone the opportunity to claim Gift Aid on their donation and automatically handles the claim process, meaning it's less work and more money for us.

Which online fundraising platform should I use?

For most fundraising we highly recommend using JustGiving. They are established, efficient and really easy to use. You can find out more about how to create a JustGiving Page on the 'Set Up a page' tab.

However, we have some other suggestions if JG doesn't fit for you:

• if you are raising funds for multiple charities, please use GoFundme.
• if you are taking part in any of the Great Run events, they will set you up with a page on Enthuse.
• If you are a small business looking to send a portion of profits, please use WorkforGood.
• if you are hosting a fundraiser in memory of a special someone, consider using a Much Loved tribute page. This platform has lots of additional features to help you and your community celebrate and remember your loved one, including space to share memories, photos, videos as well as light virtual candles etc. These pages can also host fundraisers and can be created free of charge through Mummy's Star.

What is a 'Team' page, on Just Giving and when should I use one?

Team Pages are a tool on JustGiving and are perfect if you are taking part in a fundraising challenge or event with a group of friends or colleagues.

A Team Page allows you and your friends to create individual fundraising pages that are listed in the same place and whose totals contribute to an overall group fundraising goal.

They're great if you want to raise money separately whilst still contributing to one group aim or total. The page provides links to everyone’s individual page, as well as the charity you’re raising money, so its a great way to share your fundraising easily, without splitting the money across multiple 'pots'.

Team pages are just as easy to create as individual fundraising pages. Simply choose 'Create a team' at the start of the page creation process.

Do I need to tell Mummy's Star when I've created a fundraising page?

Most of the major fundraising platforms will notify us automatically when you've set up a fundraising page in aid of us. In these cases, our Fundraising Team will get in touch as soon as we receive the email notification to start your fundraising journey.

If you don't hear from us within a week of setting up your page, or if you are using a smaller/less popular platform email us at fundraising@mummysstar.org to let us know.

Will an online page work for my raffle/bake sale/fun day/tournament etc.?

In theory, yes. Just Giving can be used to take donations at any of these events or as a place for people to make payment for tickets or to pay for participation in an event.

However, it is very important to familiarise yourself with the Gambling Commission's regulations around online fundraising before using your page. Any donations made to the page that are in return for goods, rights or services (including raffle tickets or entry to an event) will not be eligible for Gift Aid. Donors will need to declare their Gift Aid eligibility (or not) when donating to your page and you must make it clear to your attendees if they can use this function.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a tax relief allowing UK charities to reclaim an extra 25% in tax on every eligible donation made by a UK taxpayer.

Gift Aid should not be claimed when:
• Making a donation in return for tickets (raffles, events and auctions) or goods and services (including ‘experience’ days). This is because they are not 'freewill' gifts - you are getting something in return for your donation. If we decide a donation has been incorrectly marked as eligible for Gift Aid, we can’t submit it.

• Making a donation on behalf of someone else or a group of people. For example, if a friend gives you £10 which you donate to your Fundraising Page using your own card and details. Even if your friend is a UK taxpayer, the donation is not eligible because HMRC needs to know the details of the person actually contributing the funds.

• Making a donation on behalf of a company. You can only make Gift Aid declarations on your own taxpayer status when spending your own money. However, a company can claim tax relief on the donation when donating directly to the charity.

• Making a donation to a family member who's taking part in an event and their charity is contributing to the cost. For example, if you're donating to a close family member who is doing an overseas trek and the charity is paying for the cost of their trip.

What if I am not a UK taxpayer?
The Gift Aid scheme is unique to the UK. If you are not a UK taxpayer, you can still make a donation through JustGiving, but your donation will not be eligible for Gift Aid.

What if I don’t live in the UK?
A person living overseas can still claim Gift Aid provided that they are a UK taxpayer and can satisfy the Gift Aid declaration in the donation process.

How do I add offline donations to a fundraising page (JustGiving)?

Offline donations are donations you have received externally to your fundraising page (for example, in cash or as a bank transfer to your personal account). You can add these donations to your page to ensure they are counted in your final total.

When adding a donation to the page, as its creator, you will be offered the chance to label it 'raised offline'., You then pay the total amount onto your page from your personal account, as you would when making a standard donation. Note that you cannot claim Gift Aid on donations made on the behalf of others.

Alternatively you can pay offline donations to the charity directly using our website, but please note that this will not be visible on your fundraising page total.

If I don’t use an online fundraising platform, how do I submit cash donations to you?

Firstly, be sure to contact our Fundraising Team here to let us know about your event. We have some great resources and guidance to help with your event. If this has already taken place, please send your fundraising total to us via the donate button on the website here.

These are instructions for setting up an individual Just Giving page but many fundraising platforms will have similar setting up processes.

1. Create your account

If you haven't used Just Giving before, you'll need to sign up to the platform.
You'll need to provide your name, an active email address and create a password.

2. Create your page

Now you have an account you can set up a fundraising page.
Click here to visit our Just Giving charity page and then click the blue 'Start Fundraising' button.

3. Personalise your page

Just Giving will set up a basic page for you with our logo and blurb automatically loaded. You ca absolutely fundraise with it as is, BUT if you have the time it is well worth personalising your page.

Research shows that pages with more customisation generally receive more donations.

Set a fundraising target so that donors can see what your aim is and how they are helping you get there.

Consider adding to the story, telling donors more about what you are doing, why you are doing it
and how you are feeling about it.

Adding photos to the header and gallery can also make a page more attractive and engaging.

If you are using the Strava app to track your training you can also link it to your fundraising page, and this will automatically upload your training maps and achievements over time.

4. Make a donation

It might sound strange to make a donation to your own fundraising page, but Just Giving's researchers also discovered that a page with donations already visible will likely receive more subsequent donations.

You could make a small donation to get the ball rolling... or ask a friend or family member to be the first!

5. Share, share, share

Like everything online, a fundraising page grows more successful the more people see it!

Don't be afraid to share about your amazing efforts on social media, you can give periodic updates during training or preparations and include the URL for your page in ever post.

Page URLs are also really easy to send in text messages or via WhatsApp or email.

If you are advertising your challenge offline, or if you are holding an event, you can download a QR code from Just Giving that can be printed onto posters, leaflets, business cards and invites. These will allow anyone who has a smartphone to access your page with a single click.
